Taking the first step
Recovery from Trauma
Trauma is complex and often misunderstood, just like those who experience it. Psychiatrist and author Dr. Bessel van der Kolk said, “survivors of trauma often begin to fear that they are damaged to the core and beyond redemption.” Trauma can be hard to confront, but its effects show up in our inner worlds, our work lives, our friendships, romantic relationships, and so on whether we are aware of it or not. However, there is hope of recovery from trauma. I work with clients to grow from trauma and find more peace in their relationships with themselves and others.
LGBTQIA+ Affirming Care
There are vast amounts of experiences and levels of acceptance for and within the LGBTQIA+ community. People in this community aren’t strangers to the conflict between attachment and authenticity. Attachment refers to our need for connection with people we love around us who can support us and keep us safe. Authenticity refers to our need to show up as our truest selves. These two basic human needs often clash for the LGBTQIA+ community because of the varying levels of acceptance or discrimination they face among family members, peers, and the general population. Dr. Gabor Maté said, “this clash is ground zero for the most widespread form of trauma in our society: namely, the ‘small-t’ trauma expressed in a disconnection from self even in the absence of abuse or overwhelming threat.” I work with clients in the LGBTQIA+ population to help heal the wounds that emerge from this process as well as any other wounds they’ve experienced along the way.
